While living at the hotel, i got a job there watching the desk in the lobby during the graveyard shift,i had been in a shoe store, that's awful, but This times was uneventful, all i had to do was answer the phone and make sure the people coming in actually lived there. 1n the evenings i would help out at the homeless shelter, checking in things like pocket knives that weren't allowed in the bunk area while people spent the night there. Things went along fairly well and life was not too bad.
Stanislaus County sent me a notice that according to the State of California, i had met all my child support obligations and were no longer going to garnish my Social Security check. They had even sent me two checks for a refund of an overpayment totaling around $2,200.00. Now, with a little bit of a cushion in my bank account, life was great. But it was short lived. i was sent a notice from Alameda County that i still owed them $1,500.00 in child support arrears. When i took this notice to the child support office in Stanislaus County and showed them along with their notice that they had sent to me saying i no longer owed support, they told me not to worry about it, it was a computer thing that would get straighened out. So i went home thinking things would be ok.
Then in 1998 when i went to renew my driver's license, Alameda County had put
a non renewal hold on it, and the motor vehicle department would not let me renew
my license till i had gotten things straightened out. i called Alameda County and they insisted that i owed them $1,500.00. i told them that everytlling had been paid through Stanislaus County and i had a notice from them saying so. They said they needed the balance paid off, then they would audit their books and send me a refund if one was due. So i went to the bank and bought a cashier's check for the amount and 。 sent it to them. They released the hold on my driver's license and 1 was able to renew it. i thought that was the end of it, it turned out not to be so. Alameda County says the $1,500.00 was the principal balance of back child support, but interest had accumulated and i now owed them almost $4,000.00. They garnished my disability check and have been taking from it ever since.
